The Queensland Protein Group
A special interest group of the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Who we are and what we do

The Queensland Protein Group is comprised of scientists from academia, hospitals, research institutes and industry.

We hold regular meetings and events enabling discussion and exchange of expertise, as well as information on the latest research and technology developments in protein science. Read about the history of the QPG here

Upcoming Events and Meetings

Event: Queensland Protein Group: Student Research Award 2008
Date/Venue: 16 June 2008 The University of Queensland
Details: The Queensland Protein Group will hold a one day symposium to award outstanding Honours and PhD student who's research is in protein science, including but not limited to structural biology, cell biology, modelling, biochemistry and proteomics. Students studying any aspect or protein science are encouraged to participate in the event.
Students will be selected from abstracts and invited to give short presentations on their research, with several prizes awarded for travel to the 2008 Combio Conference in Canberra.
More information can be found on the Student Research Award 2008 web site

Previous Events and Meetings

Event: Queensland Protein Expression Symposium 2007
Date/Venue: 22-23 November 2007 The University of Queensland
Details: The SRC for Functional and Applied Genomics, Protein Expression Facility, will hold a two day technology symposium to review key technologies and strategies for protein expression. The symposium will provide excellent opportunities to network with local/interstate/international researchers in the field as well as exhibits from leading bioscience companies displaying the latest in protein expression and purification technologies.
Topics will include: Bacterial Expression, Yeast Expression, Baculovirus/insect cell expression, Mammalian cell expression, Cell-free expression, Industry case studies
More information can be found on this web site

Event: East Coast Protein Meeting 2007
Date/Venue: 12-14 July 2007, Opal Cove Resort, Coffs Harbour
Details: The meeting is a joint initiative by the Queensland Protein Group and the Sydney Protein Group. This two-day conference has in the past been an excellent arena for established and young protein scientists to mix on an equal footing in a relaxed atmosphere. One of the primary goals of the meeting is to provide an opportunity for younger protein scientists to present their work - most presentations are selected from submitted abstracts. The Queensland Protein Group and Sydney Protein Group are sponsors of prizes for the best student and postdoctoral presentations. Event: Conference "Mechanisms of nucleo-cytoplasmic transport"
Date/Venue: April 14th 9 am - 5 pm: UQ St Lucia Campus, Brisbane
Details: A one-day conference "Mechanisms of nucleo-cytoplasmic transport" will take place at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, on 14 April 2005. Invited national and international speakers will present recent findings in the areas of nuclear transport and cancer, development and disease, nuclear ligands and receptors, and structural insights into transport mechanisms. The invited speakers include Murray Stewart (LMB, Cambridge, UK), David Jans (Monash University, Vic), Beric Henderson (Westmead Institute, NSW), Sabine Piller (St. Vincent's Hospital, NSW), Kum Kum Khanna (QIMR) and Michael Waters and Melissa Brown (UQ).

The conference will run from 9 am - 5 pm; the program is being finalized and will be advised shortly. Registration is free, but you must register to attend the conference. To register, please send you name and affiliation to Bostjan Kobe.

The conference is supported by the Queensland Protein Group (SIG of the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology).

Event: Queensland Protein Group BBQ
Date/Venue:
April 14th 5 pm, UQ St Lucia Campus, Brisbane
Details: All protein researchers are invited to the Queensland Protein Group BBQ, which will take place in the "Secret Garden" at the Molecular Biosciences Building (number 76), University of Queensland, St. Lucia.

The BBQ will follow the QPG/ASBMB-supported one-day conference taking place earlier that day at UQ.

All students and staff interested in the activities of QPG are welcome to attend. For more information, please contact Bostjan Kobe.
